What is Grah Gochar (ग्रह गोचर)?
Grah Gochar (ग्रह गोचर) refers to the transit of planets through the zodiac signs. In Vedic astrology, while your birth chart (Kundali) shows where planets were at your birth, Gochar shows where they are right now — and how their current positions affect your life based on their relationship to your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi).
The most impactful transits are those of slow-moving planets — Saturn (Shani), Jupiter (Guru), Rahu, and Ketu — because they stay in each sign for months or years. Saturn's transit is particularly significant, giving rise to the feared Sade Sati (7.5 year period) and Dhaiya/Kantaka Shani (2.5 year period).
Our transit calculator uses the Swiss Ephemeris engine with Lahiri Ayanamsa — the same astronomical standard used by the Indian government — to compute exact planetary positions. Simply select your Moon sign to see which planets are in which houses relative to your chart, and whether any significant transit events (Sade Sati, Dhaiya, benefic Jupiter) are active for you.
Key Planetary Transits Explained
Sade Sati (साढ़े साती): The most feared transit in Vedic astrology. It occurs when Saturn transits through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from your Moon sign — a continuous period of approximately 7.5 years. It comes in three phases: Rising (12th house, ~2.5 years), Peak (over Moon sign, ~2.5 years), and Setting (2nd house, ~2.5 years). The peak phase is most intense, affecting mental peace, health, and finances.
Dhaiya / Kantaka Shani (ढैय्या): Saturn transiting the 4th or 8th house from Moon sign, lasting ~2.5 years each. The 4th house transit (Kantaka Shani) disturbs domestic peace and mental comfort. The 8th house transit (Ashtama Shani) brings sudden obstacles and health concerns.
Jupiter Transit (गुरु गोचर): Jupiter is the greatest benefic planet. Its transit through houses 2, 5, 7, 9, and 11 from Moon brings prosperity, wisdom, and good fortune. Jupiter in the 9th house is considered the best transit — bringing peak fortune and spiritual growth.
Rahu-Ketu Axis: These shadow planets always transit in opposite signs, spending ~18 months per sign. Rahu amplifies worldly desires while Ketu promotes spiritual detachment. Their position relative to your Moon sign can bring unexpected changes, foreign connections, or spiritual awakening.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if Sade Sati is active for me?
Select your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) in the calculator above. If Saturn is currently in the 12th, 1st, or 2nd house from your Moon sign, Sade Sati is active. The tool will automatically detect this and show which phase you are in — rising, peak, or setting.
What remedies help during Sade Sati?
Traditional remedies include wearing a Karungali (ebony wood) mala, reciting Shani Stotram on Saturdays, donating black items, and wearing an iron ring. Karungali is considered the sacred wood of Lord Shani and is the primary remedy recommended by most Vedic astrologers.
How often do planetary transits change?
Each planet moves at a different speed. The Moon changes sign every ~2.25 days, Sun every ~30 days, Mercury and Venus every ~25-30 days, Mars every ~45 days, Jupiter every ~1 year, Saturn every ~2.5 years, and Rahu-Ketu every ~18 months. Slower planets have more lasting effects.
What is the difference between Gochar and Kundali?
Your Kundali (birth chart) is fixed — it shows planetary positions at the moment of your birth and never changes. Gochar (transit) shows where planets are right now and keeps changing. Both are used together for predictions: the birth chart shows your potential, while transits show the current cosmic weather affecting that potential.
